Facebook announced yesterday that “every post and comment — both public and private — by a U.S. user that mentions a presidential candidate’s name will be fed through a sentiment analysis tool that spits out anonymized measures of the general U.S. Facebook population.” This analysis, along with reader polls and other information, will in turn be shared with politico.com.

Eight U.S. soldiers serving in Afghanistan have been arrested in connection with the apparent suicide of Pvt. Danny Chen, a 19-year-old infantryman who was Chinese American. The arrests came after family members pressured the Pentagon to investigate allegations that Chen had been repeatedly taunted with racial slurs. The alleged anti-Asian bullying and taunting started during basic training when fellow soldiers used a mocking accent while calling him Jackie Chen; others allegedly told him to “go back to China.” The eight soldiers have been charged with dereliction of duty and manslaughter.

Trying to mentally prepare myself for the journey that I’m about to embark on. Starting in Vietnam and visiting my mom’s hometown and my dad’s village. (Only my dad would send his kid in search of long lost relatives in a village, in a foreign country whose language I cannot speak, with only the name of the family-run store to work with. I’m sure he thought he was being helpful when he suggested I bring pictures of him and the family to aid in this wild goose chase.) Finishing in Hainan to celebrate Chinese New Year at the ancestral home.
